Brian Perry, bass
“I’m thrilled to be embarking on this fascinating new project, discovering and presenting the musical legacy of the South American culture, and to collaborate with the remarkably talented musicians of the Caminos Del Inka Ensemble.”
Brian Perry is the newest member of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra bass section. Prior to his appointment in 2004, he earned a master’s degree in double bass performance at Boston University. His principal teachers include world-renowned bassist and pedagogue Jeff Bradetich of the University of North Texas and Ed Barker, principal bassist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. While in Boston, Brian was a member of the Kalistos Chamber Orchestra, a string ensemble committed to creative programming and the development of contemporary repertoire for string orchestra. He also appeared with numerous other ensembles throughout the Boston area including the Rhode Island Philharmonic, New Hampshire Symphony, and ALEA III, the contemporary music ensemble-in-residence at Boston University. In addition, he has performed with both the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Cleveland Orchestra.
Brian spent the 2002 and 2003 summer seasons as a fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center, where he was the recipient of the Maurice Schwartz Prize. He was also selected to perform the U.S. premiere of the revised edition of Prokofiev’s Op. 39 Quintet, including two rediscovered movements. In 2004, Brian appeared as a guest artist with the renowned Vermeer String Quartet and pianist Natalie Zhu at Bay Chamber Concerts in Rockport, Maine. Brian has served as principal double bass of the Eastern, Kent/Blossom, and Pacific music festivals as well as the National Orchestral Institute. He has also served as a member of the National Repertory Orchestra in Breckenridge, Colorado.
In addition to his role with the FWSO, Brian can frequently be seen performing and volunteering throughout the community. Recently, he and several colleagues from the FWSO bass section formed the Funkytown All-Stars, a double bass quartet which performs a wide range of music, from classical to pop, in many of the FWSO Neighborhood Arts Programs and Symphony League functions as well as local venues throughout Fort Worth. Brian is also proud to be a member of the International Society of Bassists and serves as a board member for both the esteemed local baroque music ensemble Texas Camerata and the newly formed Bradetich Foundation, an organization dedicated to nurturing the careers of young, talented bassists and enhancing the role of the double bass in the 21st century. Brian also maintains an active teaching studio from his home and in January 2008 was appointed as an adjunct faculty member at the University of North Texas.
Brian lives in Fort Worth with his wife, Kathryn, a FWSO violinist, and their daughter, Madeleine.
